Restoring Earth

It's a noble mission that most people would subscribe to. But where to start?

Transformation starts with sharing information.

In 2024, a team of consultants led by Cambisol co-created a training programme with and for GIS professionals in the Caribbean as part of a World Bank initiative. The question: how can remote sensing technologies boost the islands capacity in sustainable resource management and disaster preparedness?

Focus

The big answer to that question is: access to information. Geoinformation. Maps. Climate projections. Best practices. Technical knowhow. And the good news is: a lot of this information already exists. But how to transfer this to people who dedicated their carreers to conserving nature or natural resources?

Over the course of the year, we developed open training sessions on the use of innovative technologies, including:

The target audience? Professionals dedicated to restoring the Earth - whether in land conservation, sustainable resource management, wildlife and nature protection, sustainable agriculture, or similar.

The pictures below give an impression of the training program that was co-created and provided with and for the professionals on Dominica and Saint Lucia.

The first group of trainees consisted of GIS professionals from several governmental offices in St. Lucia, including hydrology, forestry, spatial planning, and disaster management specialists.

The training programme was also provided to key specalists from Dominica, aiming to increase the island's capacity in disaster risk and response.

The content was co-created together with the trainees in the preparational period, and consisted of 5 use cases with different thematic focus (see the introductory lecture below).

Image
While each day started with a plenary introduction lecture to lay the foundational understanding of the topic, the training was strongly interactive and self-assignment based.

Image
Participants followed tutorials to gain personal hands-on experience with data analysis and visualisation in diverse applications in sustainable resource management.

Image
Trainers and participants were able to exchange professional experiences and practical applications of the data sources in their daily work.

Congratulations to the winner of the map of the week!

We are happy to to share the training material freely for public use. At this stage, the introduction slides of the 5 use cases are made available in English language below (the underlying sample data and tutorials can be requested to us).

However, our ambition is much bigger: in the future we'd like to grow this platform with multilingual content and e-tutorials. More to come!
