Restoring Earth

It's a noble mission that most people would subscribe to. But where to start?

Transformation starts with sharing information.

In 2023, a team of consultants led by Cambisol carried out an explorative study for the World Bank in line with the Progreen program in the Sahel. The question: how can innovative technologies boost the efforts of conservation professionals?

Focus

The big answer to that question is: access to information. Geoinformation. Maps. Climate projections. Best practices. Technical knowhow. And the good news is: a lot of this information already exists. But how to transfer this to people who dedicated their carreers to conserving nature or natural resources?

Over the course of the year, we developed open training sessions on the use of innovative technologies, including:

The target audience? Professionals dedicated to restoring the Earth - whether in land conservation, sustainable resource management, wildlife and nature protection, sustainable agriculture, or similar.

The pictures below give an impression of the driven group of conservationists that helped setting up the capacity building program. For more project findings, see the Executive Summary.

In April 2023, a group of government officials, NGO workers, students, and freelancers came together in a co-creation workshop in N'Djamena, Chad. We discussed the most promising technologies and needs to address in the training sessions.

Throughout 2023, several training sessions were organised in line with the above topics: drones, satellites, best practice portals, and integrated monitoring.

Image
Diverse professionals from the conservation sector attended tailored sessions that suited their interests and expertise, with a total of 96 participations.

Image
To determine the most relevant topics for the training, ~40 stakeholders shared their wants & needs in personal interviews beforehand. 82% of respondents identified the need for technical capacity building, with access to training as the #1 obstacle. The most desired technologies were cartography and remote sensing.

The proposed topics and training content was then discussed and refined during the co-creation workshop.

Image
The interest and engagement by the training participants has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are currently preparing more training in the region.

Future capacity building will focus on addressing a larger group with more in-depth topics, including field training and e-tutorials that will be uploaded on this page for free.
